Sydney Chamber Opera usually fills seats with returning customers (the kind that are familiar with Puccini, Verdi and the like), but lately, they have been courting the young with a fresh take on the medium. And guys, we’re kind of into it.
In a collaboration between our fave art-music-dance-food-everything venue—Carriageworks—and US-based festival Resonant Bodies, comes a two-day festival dedicated to bending the limits of the voice. Immersive and experimental, the show includes superbly trained musicians hailing from Australia, Sweden, Indonesia and the States.
On Friday you’ll see the ritualistic, punk-inflected work of Indonesia's Rully Shabara, and Saturday premieres a new monodrama with piano and electronics by Sydney-born tenor Mitchell Riley.
A mainstay of the NYC arts calendar, the Sydney iteration is supported by our very own theatre director and lighting designer Alexander Berlage, along with composer and technologist Benjamin Carey.
Tickets are still available and the experience offers something totally fresh for your Friday or Saturday night. If you’re not wooed already check out this video. And no matter how good the acoustics of your shower are, don’t try any of these sounds at home.
