March will see you soaking up the not-so-dirty street food hangouts popping up around Sydney, but between taco Tuesdays, Friday night burgers and 3am trips to the chicken shop, you may want to take some time out to enjoy the new yoga studio and fancy vegetarian fare on offer as well. Don’t worry guys, we’ve got you covered! Here is what’s new in Sydney this March.
One Hot Yoga & Pilates
Potts Point
Industrial chic, pure zen and flexibility collides at One Hot Yoga, the brand spankin’ new studio in Potts Point, offering over 60 yoga, Pilates and reformer classes each week. The dreamy space is the perfect setting for sweating it out, which you absolutely will, especially if you opt for a hot flow yoga or Pilates session. In the mood for something a little slower? They also offer yin yoga, which is sure to crack you wide open (in the best possible way). Plus they have some seriously good value opening memberships available, so head to their website for all of the info.
Yellow (And Their New Vegetarian Menu)
Potts Point
Breaking the fine dining mould, Yellow has re-launched their dinner menu, notably ditching meat and embracing a 100% vegetarian and vegan menu instead. Owners, Chef Brent Savage and Sommelier Nick Hildebrandt are focussed on treating heirloom vegetables with the same respect generally shown to meat with an innovative menu that will also impress meat eaters. The menu includes parsnip ‘pappardelle’ with egg yolk and pine mushrooms and a fennel pollen ice cream with plum broth.
Henrys Cronulla
Cronulla
Named after Cronulla’s original horseback policeman Henry Tugwell, Henrys has landed on the corner of Ocean Grove Avenue and Gerrale Street with a menu paired perfectly with their seaside location. Light filled and open planned, the bar is well stocked and the menu is a cut above your average bar menu. We have our eyes set on the San Daniele prosciutto with figs, burrata, olive oil and house grilled focaccia (but wouldn’t say no to the a few of their cocktails either).
Ghostboy Cantina
Haymarket
In our opinion, you can never have too many taco restaurants in Sydney, but toss in a Latin-Asian edge and you’ve certainly piqued our interest. An ode to the ultimate street food, Toby Wilson (formerly of Wedge Espresso) has created a menu celebrating nose-to-tail style tacos that make the most of underrated ingredients like pig’s ears and seaweed seasoning. Not in an adventurous mood? There are also Mexican style beef brisket and vegetarian cauliflower tacos.
SP01 at Space Furniture
Alexandria
Luxury furniture just stepped up a notch (or ten) with the launch of SP01 Design Collection, available at their showrooms in Sydney. Combining the best of international design for both commercial and residential spaces, this exquisitely curated line by Milan-based studio Fattorini + Rizzini + Partners is hand-finished and beautifully detailed, based on rigorous design and created with honest materials. More details are available at their website.
Anason
Barangaroo
Anyone who has dined at Turkish restaurant Efendy will know what to expect when they visit Anason, the newest outpost by the same team and the first permanent restaurant on Wulugul Walk at Barangaroo. Famous for serving some of Sydney’s best modern Turkish delights (see what I did there?), diners can expect exotic mezes such as salmon pastirma with zucchini and chilli, as well as purple cauliflower bake with walnut tarator. The wine list won’t disappoint either, incorporating the best of Australian and Turkish tipples.
Nimble Activewear
Bondi Beach
Finally we can easily access the ethical active wear label that’s been blowing up our Insta newsfeeds for months, with the recently launched brick and mortar store of Nimble Activewear on Hall Street. Function, affordable luxe and a strong feminine aesthetic is at the core of the brand and with the new Bondi store, you will be down dogging (or brunching) in style in no time.
Thirsty Bird
Potts Point
The guys behind Mr Crackles have done it again, opening Thirsty Bird, a fried chicken shop serving (you guessed it) fried chicken and not much else. The crispy chicken comes in both four and eight piece feeds and is served alongside classic American style add-ons such as mac and cheese and chicken crackles. There isn’t much space for a sit down dinner at this five-seat-only chicken shop, so your best bet is getting your goodies to go and finding a sneaky spot to devour your loot. We recommend you don your stretchy pants for this one.
Doughnut Time Glebe & Newtown
Quickly becoming Sydney’s fave doughnut dealer, Doughnut Time has opened TWO new stores in Glebe and Newtown to ensure that you’re never more than 20 minutes away from sweet, sweet doughnuts. Specialising in innovative doughnuts and shakes, you can’t really go wrong when there’s a Nutella-filled Love at First Bite and pistachio and brown butter glazed The Butternut on the menu. http://www.theurbanlist.com/sydney/directory/doughnut-time2
Juicy Lucy
Surry Hills
Hold on to your hats, chicken lovers! This one’s for you guys. The team behind restaurant Sugarcane has just launched Juicy Lucy—a classic Aussie chicken shop with a South Asian twist that’ll keep you guessing. What does a South Asian inspired chicken burger look like? We’re glad you asked, because it looks like the Lil’ Kim Burger, which is an impressive combination of fried chicken, Korean slaw, kim chi and Korean BBQ sauce. It also looks like a big box of glazed fried drumettes and a matching food baby.
Burgers Anonymous
Darlinghurst
With Heisenburg keeping watch over the diners, Burgers Anonymous is ditching the bells and whistles, instead delivering simple burgers done right—with all of the trimmings. The Breaking Bad theme may draw you in, but it’s the crack bacon (mm-hmm), juicy beef patties and loaded fries that’ll keep you coming back. The big boy on the menu; The Heisenburger, will see you polishing off a double beef patty, crack bacon, double cheese burger with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles and their signature BA sauce. Friday night, sorted.
