Oh boy. If you’re on the hunt for a new series to binge, The Haunting Of Hill House should well and truly be right up there on your radar.
There’s a reason why this horror series has been one of the most talked about Netflix drops of all time and if you haven’t already binged its ten episodes well, you need to.
Here’s everything you need to know about the ‘bent neck’ lady, the red room and why The Haunting has been dubbed a ‘horror home run’. And just quietly, Stephen King also hailed it as an actual 'work of genius'.
What’s The Haunting Of Hill House even about?
This one is a loose adaptation based on the gothic horror novel by Shirley Jackson who may be one of the most iconic writers of all time. Hugh and Olivia Crain move into one big-arse mansion with their five kids and cue all the supernatural occurrences. A pretty major death happens which haunts the entire family for another twenty or so years and they more or less go their separate ways because of it.
We don’t want to give too much away but down the track another massive event brings the Crains back together however it forces them to individually confront a heap of 11/10 disturbing inner-demons.
But what is it REALLY about?
So the haunted house is actually one big and complex metaphor for bottled grief and shared trauma. The ‘ghosts’ actually embody buried emotions that each member of the Crain family has never truly accepted.
Why is everyone freaking out about it? Will you actually pass out?
It’s directed by Mike Flanagan who’s a juggernaut filmmaker in the horror world having been the mastermind behind Ouija: Origin of Evil and Gerald’s Game (Netflix). In other words, his work is a well-calculated creation of suspense, shock and tension so it’s no wonder people are losing their shiz. It’s an intense watch throughout the ten episodes but you’ll definitely be able to go to sleep with the lights out because it’s scary but not like, The Ring scary.
THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE, revised and remodeled by Mike Flanagan. I don't usually care for this kind of revisionism, but this is great. Close to a work of genius, really. I think Shirley Jackson would approve, but who knows for sure.

We can’t say without spoiling but she’s definitely a major plot twist.
What’s the Red Room?
This is the room that no one is allowed to go in so understandably, spilling the beans on this would be another spoiler. Bluntly, it’s another profound and extremely horrifying metaphor.
