It’s been a big year and frankly, it’s time to unwind with something that doesn’t require the effort of lifting a book or a remote control. Of course, we’re talking about podcasts in all their varied glory, from avid storytelling to true-crime, there’s something for everyone in this month’s list.
Here are all the podcasts to binge this December.
Unobscured
Aaron Mahnke
Unobscured is all about bringing dark and half-forgotten moments in history out of the shadows. Combining narrative storytelling and interviews with historians, season one kicked off relatively recently with an exploration of the Salem witch trials. Bizarre, fascinating and often wrongly retold, Aaron Mahnke is here to set the story straight. If you’ve been watching The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina thinking and loving every minute, Unobscured is the podcast for you, stripping away the fantasy and leaving you with the naked truth. Unobscured is available on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts and Spotify.
Bloody Murder
Tara Sariban and Barney Black
We stan a true crime podcast, and Bloody Murder delivers the goods. Tara Sariban and Barney Black say to hell with all those famous serial killers, let’s look at some of the more obscure psychos. It’s all gallows humour and gory details and if you dig that, you can go on their website and buy a pair of leggings covered in creepy crime scene photos. Send a shiver up your spine; Bloody Murder is available on Apple Podcasts and Google Podcasts.
Dreamboy
Night Vale
Would you like to disappear into a world of buzzing nightlife, fantasy, dramatic prophecy, and murderous zebras? Thought so. Dreamboy tells the story of a New York musician housesitting in Cleveland, trying desperately to write an album and avoid ~too~ much time on Grindr. Somehow our lead fella gets caught up with his neighbour who dreams of death, some nightmare creatures, and a gaggle of girls trying to solve the mystery of a zebra who killed a rich kid. It’s a journey and a dream trying to answer one question: what is going on? Dreamboy is out on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts and Spotify.
BBC Earth Podcast
BBC
Relaxing and mind-boggling as always, BBC Earth Podcast whisks you around the world via your headphones. Traversing the farthest reaches of our planet, we explore nature, science and the human condition, complete with extraordinary soundscapes, and the master storytelling we’ve come to expect from the BBC. It’s information in its most serene. BBC Earth Podcast is brand new and waiting for you on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
The TED Interview
TED
We’re all super familiar with TED Talks by now; clever, enlightened and interesting people changing hearts and minds with nothing but a slide show and 18 minutes on their side. The TED Interview is an expansion of this; a long-form conversation podcast hosted by the head of TED, Chris Anderson, designed to give audiences a deep dive into the concepts presented on the TED stage. As to be expected, the interviewees are a stellar lineup. The TED Interview can be found on Apple Podcasts and the TED Android app.
