New year, new shows to watch. And who are we to complain? This month brings forward British Comedy taking the form of Sex Education, a thrill-ride with Chris Pine in I Am the Night and major cleaning inspiration with Tidying Up with Marie Kondo.
Here are all the shows to binge this January.
Netflix
Tidying Up With Marie Kondo
If you’re looking for inspiration to kick off your ‘new year, new you’ resolution, this show is going to bring it. De-cluttering queen, Marie Kondo, visits over-stuffed houses throughout the U.S and asks hoarders and sentimentalists alike to face their possessions and ask one question, “Does it bring me joy?” if the answer’s no, let it go. Tidying Up with Marie Kondo is out now.
Sex Education
Ever wondered what Gillian Anderson would be like as a sex therapist? Us too. But what’s it like being a sex therapist’s virgin son? Awkward, that’s what. Technically, Otis has no right to be telling anyone what to do with their sex lives, but when his mate comes up with a good side hustle to get them through the last few years of school, it’s hard to pass up. Therapy for cash. What could possibly go wrong? Expect good old-fashioned off-beat British humour. Sex Education is out January 11.
A Series of Unfortunate Events - Season 3
The third and final instalment of A Series of Unfortunate Events arrives to answer all your questions: what’s with the sugar bowl? What caused the schism? Are the Baudelaire children going to live through this or will Count Olaf finally get his hands on their fortune? Tune in to find out, or, heed Lemony Snicket’s advice and… don’t. A Series of Unfortunate Events season 3 is out now.
The Punisher - Season 2
When we left everyone’s favourite brutal anti-hero murder machine at the end of season one, Frank Castle had damn near killed Billy Russo for his hand in the death of Frank’s family. But, it would seem, Billy was not quite dead enough and the pretty boy is back as the not-so-pretty Jigsaw. There’ll big hits and even bigger guns. Side note: Better watch this one quickly before Netflix severs another tie with Marvel. The Punisher season 2 is out January 18.
Stan
Bloom
After a flood that strips everything from a rural Australian town, hope blooms (really though) in the form of a tree of youth. It’s the best kind of wish fulfilment, a chance to make up for lost time and restore a mind ravaged by Alzheimer’s. Starring Aussie greats Bryan Brown and Jacki Weaver, Bloom is out now.
I Am the Night
After discovering she’s adopted, a young woman travels to LA in search of her real family, but what she finds is the darkest and deadliest side of Hollywood. We’re talking some seriously disturbing underground clubs - and not the kind with a DJ. Starring Chris Pine and directed by Wonder Woman’s own Patty Jenkins, I Am the Night is an edge-of-your-seat thriller based, terrifyingly, on a true story. The limited series starts January 29.
Black Monday
The 1980s can be defined by curls, coke, and the crash. That is, the 1987 stock market crash, marked as the worst in Wall Street’s history. In all these years, nobody has figured out who caused it… until now. Starring Don Cheadle and a truly spectacular moustache, Black Monday lands January 21.
Amazon Prime Video
Informer
Nabbed on a minor drug charge, a second generation British-Pakistani is pressured by the cops to turn informer on the Muslim community. Protesting that he doesn’t know any terrorists, Raza’s police handler simply answers, “We’ll get you there”. Heralded as nuanced and original, Informer is our January 11.
