2018 was a wild year of reckoning for women—and this weekend a wave of marches will be staged throughout the world to continue the conversation on positive change into 2019.

#WomensWave is the third annual global march for women and Sydney’s version is happening on Sunday, kicking off at 11.30am in Hyde Park with talks from leading thinkers like Bhenji Ra, Bri Lee, Jane Brock and Aunty Norma. The march will then travel over to Belmore Park near Central Station.

At Belmore, marchers will be treated to a Feminist Fair with performances from Des Fleurs, Malaika Green and Body Type, and a bunch of stalls from the organisations championing a new mindset on violence against women in Australia. Head down and show your support to legends like Potts Point women’s refuge Lou’s Place, fEMPOWER (who host gender equality workshops), Mums4Refugees and Grandmothers Against Detention of Refugee Children. Head here for more info.

Bhenji Ra will be joining us this Sunday for #WomensWave! @newgenderwhodis is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice combines dance, choreography, video and installation. Her work is often concerned with the dissection of cultural theory and identity, centralising her own personal histories as a tool to reframe performance. With an emphasis on occupation and at times collective action, her work plays with the multiplicities of spectacle while offering strategies to disrupt normativity and western dance convention. Collaboration is key to her work as she regularly accesses her own community as an essential critical voice. Join us at Hyde Park South this Sunday at 11:30am as the #WomensWave sweeps Sydney.

And Sunday’s all-out solidarity doesn’t stop there. Sydney burger legends and #WomensWave ambassadors Jake Smyth and Kenny Graham (Mary’s, The Unicorn, The Lansdowne) are throwing an epic after party. Hosted at The Lansdowne, there’ll be an all-female DJ lineup, including Cool Change and Charlie Ellison. All proceeds from the sale of Young Henry’s beers and Gordon’s pink gin will go to Lou’s Place. Head over here for more info.
