Challenge Yourself, Go Makeup Free This Month To Help Raise Bulk Dollars For Charity

The choice to go makeup free is a powerful statement in our society of linear, idealistic beauty standards. The pressure of looking ‘perfect’ on social media channels has only concentrated these unattainable beauty goals, with what being deemed beautiful in western cultures is set by a small, influential few, intended for the masses.

Wearing makeup, for many however (including myself), also provides a feeling of confidence, of self-expression and individualism.

If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, then it is up to us as individuals to celebrate the many millions of ways beauty is expressed.

Makefree May is an initiative to help raise money for the Human Kind Project; a non-for-profit organisation working with dozens of countries and over 190 world leaders to end extreme poverty, world hunger, injustices and inequality in the world’s most under privileged nations. Working with local women and girls on the ground in local communities, the Human Kind Project helps fund education and supports individuals to build financially sustainable futures for their families.

By going makeup free for the month of May and helping raise funds for the Human Kind Project, you’re making a statement; you can use the power of applying (or not applying, in this case) a simple thing like makeup, for some serious good. "This isn’t a war on makeup, it’s just a break. To see if we feel differently about the face we were born with. And to take a moment to forgo something that isn’t as necessary as it perhaps feels, to offer something very necessary and life-changing to another." says the makefree team.

‘I felt powerful because my initial intentions realized themselves. My desire to listen to myself, to tear down the walls I built over all those years, to be full of purpose, and to be myself! The universe was listening to those things I'd promised myself, or maybe I was just finally listening to the universe, but however it goes, that's how this whole #nomakeup thing began. Once the photo I took with Paola came out as the artwork for my new song "In Common," it was that truth that resonated with others who posted #nomakeup selfies in response to this real and raw me. I hope to God it's a revolution. 'Cause I don't want to cover up anymore. Not my face, not my mind, not my soul, not my thoughts, not my dreams, not my struggles, not my emotional growth. Nothing.’ The glorious @aliciakeys via @lennyletter. Art by @andreapippins #MakefreeMay
