Let’s just say, Sydney is good at booze. From our top-notch craft beers to our world-class spirits, this city is home to some damn fine distillers and brewmasters. And among the very best of them is Marrickville’s Mobius Distilling Co.
This pint-sized small-batch distillery is another standout link in the chain of the Inner West’s lock on artisanal Aussie booze—and they have recently been making some noise overseas with an apple pie-infused liqueur that needs to be on your springtime drinks radar.
Mobius’ Moreau Apple Pie liqueur is a boozy spin on grandma’s favourite dessert, and it’s just won the top prize in London Spirits Competition 2020 and the Australian International Spirits Competition 2020.
The name is inspired by H. G. Wells' The Island of Doctor Moreau and the fantastical world of the mad scientist Dr Moreau. Each bottle is made with cold-pressed juice from 12 apples sourced from the family-owned Bellevue Orchard in Victoria, each completely preservative and concentrate-free.
“We take the provenance of our ingredients seriously,” says head distiller Philip Crossley. “Vanilla sourced from Tonga adds a subtle creamy flavour, while the spiciness of cinnamon provides balance, resulting in a smooth, lingering finish—in essence, a warm pastry flavour reminiscent of Grandma’s home-made apple pie, in a glass”
And while Moreau Apple Pie liqueur has previously only been available to select bars and close friends of the Mobius crew, it has very recently been released it into the wild and yes, you can now add it to your bar cart.
"The liqueur is so versatile and works well as a base for a cocktail, paired with a variety of other spirits and mixers," says Crossley. "Our goal was to create a delicious drink that people can have some fun with; we want professionals and amateurs to experiment with flavour combinations to see what they enjoy."
Pour it as an after-dinner treat, over ice cream as an apple twist on the classic affogato; drink it cold, warm or in a blueberry pie sour—this is a tasty, home-grown liqueur that needs to be in your collection. Shop yours right here.
We've also heard on the down-low that Mobius has plans to open up a little distillery bar soon. Definitely stay tuned for this one guys.
