That’s right team, an entire pop-up dedicated to tamales is coming. In case you’re clueless as to what these epic and tasty AF calorie-filled beauties are, think of them as perfectly steamed corn parcels of corn masa dough packed with meat or veges. Then imagine them topped with all sorts of Mexican flavours and yeah-huh, you can load yours up with all the salsas and pickles.
Oh, you might want to wipe that drool away before you read on for all the juicy deets.
The down-low is that the aptly named Lulu’s Hot Tamales is hosting a pop-up at Newtown’s small bar, The Midnight Special, with the golden good stuff and a heap of other snacks to boot. Think fried mac ‘n’ cheese topped with Cheezel dust (because why not?), a New Orleans Italian sambo stuffed with meats, a Mexican-inspired chicken katsu burger and a heap more.
But let’s be honest, we’re all here for the tamale showdown. And it looks something a little like this—a 12-hour slow cooked chipotle pork shoulder stuffed corn parcel, a roasted sweet potato and melted cheese tamale and finally (for the vegans out there) a golden package filled with sweet potato, black bean salsa and cumin lime sour cream.
Basically, you’re in for one helluva food coma so we’ve only got one piece of advice for you, brace yourselves.
