Meet The Young Filmakers Documenting Australian Homelessness

$

0

On any given night in Australia, 1 in 200 people are sleeping on the streets. Best estimates at the moment put the total number at just over 100,000.

For local filmmakers Jacob Perrott and Derek Abel, those numbers don’t tell the whole story. They’ve been compiling interviews with people sleeping rough over the last four years, piecing them together for their documentary, Homeless Australia.

“It’s such a tough project,” says Derek, in a surprisingly candid interview. “The truth is, finding funding to finish the project is damn hard, and I’ve reached a point where I’m not sure if we should continue. It feels like it’s too personal. Like we’re taking advantage of the people on the screen.”

We sat down with Derek to discuss the current state of homelessness in Australia, what governments are messing up, and what you and I can do to help.

Why did you start this project?

We just wanted to show people that it’s not about being lazy. Homelessness is so much more complicated than that. It’s mainly social and economic problems, family problems, monetary problems. There are mental health issues. And if you don’t have anyone to support you, that’s it. You’re done.

Before we set out, we said at least let’s change the life of one person. Just one. If we do that, it’ll be worth it.

Do you think you’ve achieved that yet?

Yeah, well I mean the full documentary isn’t out yet. It’s not finished. But there’s this kid called Jake, and he was sleeping on the street when we first met him. And then he managed to get a flat. We asked him ‘How did that happen?’ and without prompting he said, ‘The minister saw your video and he was so embarrassed that he put me on the priority list and I got a house.”

What are the challenges for filmmakers looking to cover homelessness?

Yeah, it’s difficult. There’s a lot of people doing docos about homelessness, which is great, but it means it’s very hard to get funding. Plus in the past two years I’ve had two kids, so I’ve been busy with other projects. Jacob is the same thing.

The other thing is this sense of taking advantage. It’s a fine line. There’s this other boy in the video, we found out his mother kicked him out when he was 16, and it turns out she was raped by this serial killer, and the serial killer was his father. She couldn’t live with the kid, because it was a reminder of what happened. You come across stories like that and it makes you question everything.

Photography: Derek Abel

How have people reacted when you approach them for an interview?

Yeah really positive. Everyone’s very happy to talk. No-one really gives them that chance, I guess. Everyone wants to tell their story. The sad thing is, people just don’t give a shit. We’re all too busy with our own problems. There’s so much anger in the world. People are quick to judge. They take that anger and put it onto someone else.

Where does that anger come from?

I think the anger is, ‘It’s not fair. Why do they get to just sleep on the street and not work while I have to pay bills?’ Plus people have their own problems. We found it’s usually drunk people attacking the homeless, so alcohol plays a big part. But alcohol is just a symptom of a bigger problem—you’re just fed up and you have no money and you have to work at a job you don’t like and you’re probably in a relationship you don’t want to be in, so you take it out on someone who can’t fight back.

Do you reckon the government is doing enough to fight homelessness?

Probably not. There are some services. If you’re living on the street and you’re lucky, the government will find you a flat and put you on benefits. But that’s it. They don’t offer any psychological help. No consultations. A lot of people find it really difficult to transition. They’re so used to sleeping tough, the pressure builds, and they’re not used to it. A lot of the times the government gives them these units on the 10th or 20th floor of these massive buildings, which is just stupid for people who should probably be on suicide watch. We met one guy who used his mattress to cover the window so he didn’t have to look outside.

What can people do to help?

I think just empathise a bit more. Have a conversation with people sleeping rough. Just talk to them. Another good way to help—you don’t need to give money to people on the street, just support good organisations. Wayside Chapel and Vinnies do great work. Honestly, just stop and buy them lunch or something, have a chat. That makes so much difference.

Here’s Why Emu Eggs Are Trending Right Now

$

What’s that old saying? Someone had to be the first to eat an oyster? I feel like emu eggs require a similar level of Magellan-like gastronomic courage. Seriously, this 8-ft bush turkey lays an emerald green dinosaur egg—600 grams of gelastic yolk and albumin. You crack it open, and eat what’s inside?

Well buckle up, because you’re about to see emu eggs on more menus around town. According to emu farmers—and yes there are such things—emu egg sales are on the rise, driven mostly by restaurants and cafes.

“There’s definitely a trend for edible emu eggs,” says Emu Ridge supplier Bev Turner. “We used to only do like Survivor and My Kitchen Rules. You know, the TV shows wanting something ‘weird’. Now it’s actual restaurants ringing up wanting them.”

A post shared by Attica Restaurant Melbourne (@atticamelbourne) on Sep 26, 2018 at 12:04am PDT

Bev says the trade of emu eggs is strictly controlled, and the rules differ from state to state. “We’re the only ones in South Australia who can do it,” she says. “We have a special license to keep and sell edible eggs. There’s only 12 licensed sellers in all of Australia, because the government doesn’t want people hatching emus.”

It turns out, breeding emus is also pretty temperamental. You can’t just leave the heat lamps on all night and have them laying eggs year ‘round.

“Emus only lay in winter,” Meg says. “They were like a barometer for Indigenous Australians. They lay as the first rains start, at least in South Australia, and they finish when the rains finish. You’ve got three months to get as many eggs as you can.”

So what can you actually do with an emu egg? Well, in theory, you can use it exactly as you would a hen’s egg. Just adjust your portion sizes. People have fried them, turned them into football-size Scotch eggs, there are recipes for emu egg Benedict and even emu egg quiche.

Bev says the taste is pretty much like a chicken egg, although some chefs reckon you get a deeper flavour, like a duck egg or quail egg. What everyone agrees is that emu eggs make the fluffiest scrambled eggs of all time. “The old farmers' wives used to use them because they made the best sponge cakes.”

Whether you start seeing emu eggs on every menu will depend on economic factors. Clearly there’s a taste for them (bars like Eau de Vie in Melbourne are even using the shells as decorative bowls), but on a cost-per-egg basis, the numbers don’t really stack up. Bev sells her eggs for $30 a pop. And even though an emu egg equals 12 chicken eggs, that’s still around quadruple the price. The price of chilli scramble would skyrocket, and that’s a future we don’t want to contemplate.

“Some chefs try to get around the cost by freezing the eggs,” says Bev. “Then they grate a little yolk onto their dishes. So they can say ‘grated emu egg’ on the menu, without shelling out for a whole egg every time.”

When To Expect American Horror Story: Cult To Hit Netflix

There are many things to love in Australia but the delay in Netflix releases compared to the US is not one of them. Indeed, we’re on a two-season setback when it comes to the anthology horror series created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk but we’re keen as mustard to delve into this one in a big way, especially since this one is said to mimic and reference modern day politics. And in true AHS-form, expect a mass murder.

With all the hype around American Horror Story’s Apocalypse trailer, you can’t blame us for being the whiny kids on the block who really just want to binge all 11 episodes of season seven already. And don’t get us started on the all the spoilers online. But enough speculation, the nitty gritty hard facts is where it’s at.

Basically, we’re on the home-run for this one to land on Netflix with American Horror Story: Cult set to hit around February 2019. However, if you’re like us and can’t wait until then, you can always grab this one on Blu-Ray and DVD right now and beat the punters to it.

Art is all about expanding your horizons, right?

Well, forget all those inner city-bound art shows and schedule an art excursion to Blacktown in November for a place-based festival called RIGHT HERE. RIGHT NOW.

There's a lot of great art happenings in Sydney's West (Casula Powerhouse and Campbelltown Arts Centre host some of the coolest exhibitions year round). However, come November, the heart of Blacktown will be totally pulsing with performance, installation, music, film and food that celebrates the diversity of the neighborhood.

RIGHT HERE. RIGHT NOW is a 3.5-hour art explosion, presented by Urban Theatre Projects in partnership with Blacktown Arts. Hosted over nine nights in November, it features a feast, as well as five newly commissioned artworks made in collaboration with more than 25 young and emerging Western Sydney and internationally-based artists.

Known for highlighting the drama of the every day, SA-based multidisciplinary artist Meg Wilson collaborates with local Sydney artist Nicole Bakkarat to install eight giant trampolines in a site-specific installation and dance/acrobatic performance piece called Team Trampoline. Each one is woven from textiles and fabrics with the help of local residents and students.

The stuff of childhood dreams, these trampolines will buoy viewers with their beauty instead of their bounce.

Dedicated to the night-owls, the restless and the lonely-hearts among us, award-winning theatre director Roslyn Oades brings us The Nightline, an immersive audio-portrait of what happens in the wee hours. Tune in via headphones to experience a collection of late night calls made to an anonymous phone line over two years. The work unites forlorn voices in their shared experiences of worry and wonder. It’s an exclusive underground listening experience that even the larks can get in on.

And there’s more. RIGHT HERE.RIGHT NOW presents a dynamic program of art that explores personal stories within a universal context, to reflect on important issues unfolding in Australia and globally.

To top it all off, your ticket includes a group feast. Yep, once you've soaked up all that art, you'll get to gorge on local culinary delights from surrounding Persian, Ethiopian and Afghan restaurants. That’s a few of our November nights sorted. Tickets are available here

The festival is entirely dedicated to rosé which means rosé tasting stalls, a pop-up food market and of course, said rosé-infused cotton candy.

Alongside all pink drink antics, there’ll be taco trucks, burger stalls and cold ones from Panhead, Furphy and Young Henry’s. Head here to book.

Every Horror Film You Should Have Watched By Now

$

What’s a good night-in without popcorn and tonnes of scary movies at your disposal? If you’re the type of person who’s obsessed with jump scares, gruesome murders and terrifying true stories, then it’s time to visit these fantastically frightening horror movies. And even if you’re not well, sit tight. You'll be right.

We’ve got you covered from new releases, movie franchises, Netflix Originals and cult classics. Here’s every horror film you should have watched by now.

Comfortably Scary

Netflix: The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina

We're easing into it with the 90s witch remake everybody needed. It's not a complete cop-out because this time around things are much darker and sinister. If you’re a fan of creepy teenage supernatural melodrama, you’ll probably dig this show.

FRIDAY THE 13TH (1980)

There’s no going past the 1980 original in this slasher film (helllooo young Kevin Bacon). Its 70s aesthetic have made this movie a cult classic where a group of camp counsellors are stalked and murdered by an unknown assailant, after re-opening Camp Crystal Lake, which years before was the site of a young boy’s drowning.

SCREAM (1-4)

Say hello to another cult classic. Get your hands on all four Scream movies and settle in for a Ghostface marathon. Yep, think a knife-wielding maniac stalks high school students. You know, just casually.

IT FOLLOWS

It Follows will stop your tinder swiping in a heartbeat and will leave you wary of anyone who comes too close. A curse gets transmitted from person to person when they commit to the ol’ hanky-panky with the only goal of killing its victim.

Pretty Spooky

THE OTHERS

An oldie but a goodie, if you like your scary movies to have a good storyline this one is most definitely for you. At first glance this The Others looks to be just another ‘haunted house’ movie but the ending has quite the twist.

THE BABADOOK

The Babadook brings every child’s nightmare of the monster under the bed to life. A single mother struggles with her son’s fear of monsters. After a creepy pop-up book, Mister Babadook actually appears and her son's hallucinations spiral out of control.

IT (2017)

Every 27 years an ancient, shape-shifting evil thing emerges from the sewer to prey on the children of a town called Derry. Over one horrifying summer, seven young outcasts must band together and face their worst nightmare, the bloodthirsty clown known as Pennywise.

Damn Terrifying

HEREDITARY

This supernatural horror film has our Aussie actor Toni Collette starring as mother of a family that is seemingly possessed by a spirit but the film has an even more disturbing message behind it (which we would spill but you know, spoilers).

NETFLIX: SINNER

Sinner is the terrifyingly epic psychological thriller (we know, not horror by definition but still) produced by superhuman Jessica Biel, based around an investigation into a crime where there is no identified motive. It gets pretty hectic at around fourteen-and-a-half minutes in so, brace yourself.

NETFLIX: AMERICAN HORROR STORY

If you’re keen for a little more suspense than usual, AHS is where it’s at. You’ll find this one on Netflix and each season revolves around a different type of horror theme ie. haunted houses, freak shows, mental asylums and witches.

THE VISIT

It can’t be a real scary movie list without at least one M. Night Shyamalan mention. And let’s be honest, you could make it one epic movie marathon night and just watch all of his stuff because he’s low-key obsessed with all the horror (shout out to his other scary-but-good-but-scary films The Village, Signs and The Sixth Sense).

LIGHTS OUT

Ok people, could you think of anything worse than seeing some creepy, lanky silhouette every time you turned out your lights? Such is the premise for this scary movie. It’s also produced by James Wan (director of The Conjuring) so we’ll just leave it at that.

THE CONJURING | Annabelle | The Nun

Speaking of, the fact that The Conjuring is based on a true story makes this the one of the scariest. This one is apart of a mega-production of other movies connected by the same plot so if you’re not too scared, you’ll have to hit up Annabelle, The Conjuring 2, Annabelle: Creation and The Nun after. In that order.

A QUIET PLACE

A family with young children try to survive in this forcibly quiet world but whether or not they can reallyyyy survive is another question.

NETFLIX: THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE

This Netflix Original is so haunting that even the actors couldn’t sleep and felt a presence during filming. Stephen King actually called this one a ‘work of genius’ so as if we need to convince you any more.

GET OUT

Known as the must-see ‘smart movie’ everyone should watch, this should already be on your blockbuster bucket list anyway. It also won the Academy Award for best screenplay.

5 Savvy Airport Hacks For Your Next Trip

$
0
0

With the holiday (read: silly) season just around the corner, it’s quite likely you’ll be heading to the airport at some stage over the summer. But as exciting and relaxing as a holiday getaway is, travelling is always easier when you are prepared.

To ensure your airport experience is more delightful than dire, we’ve listed five savvy airport survival tips to try the next time you fly out.

Pre-book your parking

Not only can you save time by pre-booking your airport parking, it’s easy-peasy and you can save some serious cash. Gone are the days of circling the airport carpark praying for a park. And if you’re a bit of an organisation oracle, do we have good news for you. You can book your parking up to 12 months in advance (we don’t even know what we’re doing tomorrow let alone next year, but ok).

Check Your Flights Through Facebook and Twitter

If you haven’t already noticed, Sydney Airport’s T1 International is now a ‘quiet terminal’, so there’s no more endless updates about last-minute calls, flights boarding or closing. It’s as simple as checking your flight times and updates on the Sydney Airport website – or better yet, jumping on the @flySYD Facebook or Twitter pages and staying up-to-date with the flight subscription service (or for all the latest info on your flight). Missing your flight can remain a thing of the past.

Pick up a 'Fly by Mike' pack

For Sydney food aficionados, Kitchen by Mike needs no introduction. Gastronomical genius, Mike McEnearney, has dished up moreish, local produce packed with zing and zest for nearly a decade across his restaurants, and his exclusive Sydney Airport arm is no different. Not only can you tuck into his coveted beer-can jerk chicken, twice-cooked pork belly with Piccadilly or wood-fired brussels sprouts, you can also grab ‘em to go to avoid the dreaded bland beef or flavourless chicken scenario on some airways. Now, that’s something to look forward to on a long-haul flight.

Duty free online shopping

What’s better than tax-free shopping? Why, tax-free online shopping, of course. If you want to nail your duty-free like a boss (who doesn’t?!) then HEINEMANN Tax & Duty Free 'shop and collect' will make it happen. You can now browse and purchase the products you want from up to 30 days prior to your flight, and simply collect them when you’re there. Too easy. Like we needed another reason to shop – ha!

Hit up Heinemann TAX & DUTY FREE range of bars

There are two types of people in the world: those who arrive early and those who arrive late. When arriving at the airport before a long flight, the age-old idiom ‘the early bird gets the worm’ is more fact than a mere metaphor. Fortunately, for the early birds, HEINEMANN Tax & Duty Free has created bespoke destinations within its store including a tasting bar showcasing the latest liquors, limited edition and exclusive bottles. If you’re in the mood for something more, Coast Café and Bar and Bridge Bar feature menus by Luke Mangan with a selection of local wines and cocktails to enjoy - so you can swirl, sniff and sip 'til your heart's content. Now, that's worth leaving early for.

The 90s-inspired collabs just keep on coming. But really, it was an era of loads of volume and colour and epic emblems of teen spirit, so who’s complaining? Not me.

This time around, London label Lazy Oaf has paired up with one of the greatest alt teen idols of the 90s—actually, one of the greatest of all time—Daria Morgendorffer.

For everyone unacquainted with Daria’s signature round glasses, bangs, tartan skirt and Doc Martens, she’s a high school hero whose endless deadpan sarcasm, style and BFF Jane Lane made being quirky, intelligent, introverted and an outcast cool.

The iconic MTV show started as a sketch on the back of a paper plate and was a spin-off of Beavis and Butthead. It’s actually the longest-running animated series in the network's history.

Lazy Oaf's Daria collection sticks to the cartoon's colour palette of purples and greens. There are tees with classic meme-style quotes ("Do you think if you breathe on me I might catch your enthusiasm?"), an "I hate everybody" cotton cardigan in grassy green, and a violet turtleneck featuring the logo of Daria's fave news program, Sick, Sad World

There's also "I hate everybody" cutoffs and a matching "Go to hell" jacket featuring a patch with the outline of Jane's seminal razor-sharp bob. Best part? Lazy Oaf is keeping it real with nothing over $200. We are overcome with emotion. Shop it all right now, here

NGO Founder Grace Forrest On Travelling With Purpose

$
0
0

Not your average 25-year-old, Grace Forrest set up Walk Free Foundation when she was just 17 years old and in just eight years it has worked to liberate almost 19,000 people from slavery—so you could say she’s doing an ok job.

Grace isn’t exactly easy to pin down—she’s been on almost 50 flights this year alone—but we managed to grab a few minutes with her to chat about what Walk Free Foundation does, her top tips on how to help when you’re travelling—including three legit voluntourism organisations—and her favourite places around the world where you can make a difference.

Why Did You Set Up Walk Free Foundation?

I was volunteering in Nepal when I was 15, and it was then that I was first exposed to the realities of slavery. I founded Walk Free Foundation two years later and have been fighting this massive, global human rights abuse ever since.

How Is Walk Free Foundation Fighting Modern Day Slavery?

Walk Free’s mission is to fight, and ultimately end slavery in all its forms in our lifetime. Given 71 per cent of all victims of modern slavery are women and girls, everything we do is underpinned by a mission to protect and empower women.

We co-founded the Freedom Fund—now the world’s leading frontline intervention group—to work with communities to liberate people from slavery (to date they have liberated 18,873 people).

We also work to protect survivors, collaborate with activists to draw attention to the problem, and work with governments to ensure adequate legislation to guarantee not only business transparency, but also to ensure that cultural justifications don’t allow anyone to be systemically held back.

What Does An Average Week Look Like For You?

There is no such thing as an average week, but for the most part, you’ll find me on the road or in the air. My main role is to educate people about slavery and work with government and business leaders to spark action. In the last two years, my work has taken me to about 15 countries.

How Can The Average Person Help While They Are On The Road?

Travel with clothes you love, and that are practical for the weather so you aren’t tempted to buy cheap fast fashion that you don’t really need. Always travel with your own durable water bottle (just make sure it’s empty when you go through security). Add a Hydralyte or teabag (lemon and ginger if getting sick, jasmine for finding namaste) for an extra kick. Staying hydrated minus the plastic cups will mean you won’t get off your flight feeling like a sultana, it helps you adjust to jetlag and it reduces your environmental footprint. Always remember that you are a guest in someone else’s home and it is your responsibility to understand cultural sensitivities. When I was working in the Beqaa Valley in Lebanon (the oldest conflict zone in the world) it was stinking hot, and I would have given anything to wear shorts and a shirt. However, this wouldn't have been culturally appropriate. At the end of the day, meeting local standards is not about your freedoms being restricted, but rather about respecting another culture and setting the right tone for you to create the most positive impact possible. Along these lines, if a local is kind enough to invite you for a meal, make sure you go if it's safe. Make it possible for people to share their culture and country with you, it will no doubt be a highlight of your trip. Do your research before going to work or serve with local organisations. Ensure you are supporting a legitimate organisation which prioritises the needs of the people it is serving. I really rate The Cambodian Children’s Fund, Hope for Children in Ethiopia and Maiti Nepal.

What Are Your Top Destinations For Travelling With Purpose?

India

Not to go full ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ on you, but you can’t go past India when considering places to travel with purpose. The country is almost like a world of its own, with so much variation in customs, traditions, language and culinary specialties between the states.

My favourite city in India is Mumbai—it is bright and beautiful and combines the charm of an ancient culture with the hustle of a globally-integrated port. But there is also extensive poverty. It is impossible to assist every person who will ask you for money or help, but you always have the opportunity to eat or buy beautiful local things. Everything you buy and do can support another person, so be mindful, grateful and tip if you can afford to.

Samoa

I love community and village living where families rely on each other and work together to protect and advance each other’s happiness and prosperity. This culture, where senior members of the family are honoured and help raise the younger generation with a sense of identity and purpose, is often lost in western culture.

Places I have been where this is prevalent include Samoa and Palau, but Samoa holds a special place in my heart. The ocean is beautiful and largely unaffected by human impact. The people are kind, generous and willing to share their beautiful environment with you as long as you respect it and respect them.

THE CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA

She’s only just dropped fresh on Netflix but she’s already the 90s witchery remake we’ve been waiting for. The OG Sabrina The Teenage Witch is back but this time around things are set to be much darker and sinister. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is heading up the production (you might know him from Glee and Riverdale), and the early reviews are all thumbs up. If you’re a fan of creepy teenage supernatural melodrama, you’ll probably dig this show.

MUSIC

RÜFÜS DU SOL: SOLACE

We don’t need to tell you how solid RÜFÜS DU SOL’s third and latest album is (no doubt, you’ve heard all the praise around it). Their highly anticipated piece of work Solace is inspired by the trio’s tour experience over the last two years, their move from Sydney to LA and basically, it’s pure sonic magic. We're shouting out their tracks Treat You Better, No Place and Underwater which will absolutely be your go-to jams this summer having already been streamed on Spotify almost 20 million times already. If you missed it, these guys have also locked in dates for their biggest Aussie tour ever.

PODCASTS

Gladiator

Hype has well and truly circulated this week around the podcast Gladiator, hosted by Bob Hohler, an investigative sports reporter for the Boston Globe.  This one has been put together by podcast company Wondery (they also brought us Dr.Death) and the Globe which should set some alarms off for you. If you remember the Academy Award-winning movie Spotlight, then you should also know that Bob Hohler brought about Gladiator alongside the Spotlight Team to delve deep into how football star Aaron Hernandez went from Super Bowl star to convicted murderer in a few years.

TV SHOWS

The Haunting Of Hill House

Netflix’s brand new horror series The Haunting Of Hill House has been big on every serious binge-watcher’s radar this week. There’s been questions around the ‘bent neck’ lady, the Red Room and whether or not you’ll actually pass out while watching it (we answer those questions here). Regardless, this is one to get on board especially because Stephen King has literally hailed it as “a work of genius”. You’ve got nothing to lose really.

PODCASTS

Serial

Serial season three is here and get ready to mix things up from their trademark self-contained investigative stories co-produced by Sarah Koenig and Julie Snyder (who also brought us S-Town). The next stretch of audio-magic brings Cleveland’s criminal justice system to the forefront, and shines a light on a number of different cases. What makes this next phase of Serial super exciting is the ridiculous amount of access the producers were granted; recordings from courtrooms, judges’ chambers and attorney offices. The team spent an entire year inside the criminal courts in Cleveland so you better believe you’ll get to hear everything that really happens on the inside.

APPS

Florence

For those that like to tap into your best-relaxed self (who doesn’t?), Florence is an interactive novel from Melbourne-based designers, that’s filled with pleasant everyday experiences and even, all the feels that come with falling in love. From the lead designer of Monument Valley, if you’re a fan of comics, you’re probably going to become very addicted. The winner of an Apple Design Award at the Worldwide Developer Conference, you’ll be swiping your way to more relaxed vibes in no time. For more on this one, head here.

MUSIC

Sticky Fingers: Cool And Calm

Not necessarily a binge, however you will absolutely have this one on repeat (and when it comes to music that’s essentially the same thing). Sticky Fingers just dropped their latest, cruisey tune, ‘Cool And Calm’ and that’s exactly how you’ll feel when you play this one. Alongside this win, these Aussie guys have shot an 8mm music video flaring up all the vintage vibes and as always, it’s pure greatness. Is this a sneaky drop from an album in the pipeline? If so, you heard it here first.

Yep, this epic new hotspot offers video games, baby-grand pianos, bass guitars, robot kits, GoChip beams and epic floor to ceiling art installations.

And, of course, what library doesn’t house a bunch of mind-boggling art installations? High Water is a series of massive LED screens that interpret local weather patterns in abstract colours, and Cloud Nation features a vintage aircraft hung high above which is based on Jonathan Swift’s novel Gulliver’s Travels.

There are all sorts of cosmic features: exposed foam, NASA Meatball insignia, Velcro, and that iconic space suit ‘Firecracker’ orange. The white and black Sk8-His feature stitching at the heal quoting Neil Armstrong’s infamous words: “The eagle has landed.”

Coolest part? There’s more to come. A space jacket, duffle bag, tees, more sneakers and a backpack are due to drop soon too.

For now though, you can cop the first drop from the Vans Space Voyager collection from November 2 at HYPE DC, Loaded, Area 51 and Vans stockists.

Here are all the other sneakers you need to know about in November.
